Is the armor based on Roman Legionary armor, or something from a later period? I don't remember the Roman cuirasses having those long 'flaps' hanging down either leg; they look more Norman French to me.

The armour is generally based on Byzantine forms, but since Magnus is nominally of the equestrian class, he gets to wear the lang mail under his armour for added protection. Nobles and Cavalry get more armour because in theory the horse carries it, but Magnus is not a very good rider and makes good time on foot, being lupine and all.
